Stratford Middle School

On Wednesday nights, I go to Kung-Fu for 50 minutes.  In kung-fu, we train fighting and self-defense.  It is very hard work, but it is well worth it.  We not only do hand forms in kung-fu, but also weapons, including the staff and the sword.  There are also many different belt levels, some like green, blue, and the black ones are weapon forms.  I enjoy kung-fu because it helps me build my character with the exercise and the hard work.  The masters train me to do quite a lot, but kung-fu is not annoying, but it is very good exercise and training.  However, kung-fu can be very pushing and hard, and when I am tired, my body is not very comfortable.  But it gets better after a while and a week later, I am ready to start again.  I have to come early, as I go directly to kung fu from school.  I like to exercise, and one way I do so is by doing kung-fu.  I want to do kung-fu until I get the black belt rank.

Jason's Tiger Claw Tournament thoughts

Overall I understand some of the frustrations others have expressed in regards to the organization of the tournament.  My experience both with the KungFu tournaments and sparring tournaments that I have attended is that they are all generally like this, due to many factors such as late admissions of competitors, lack of sufficient volunteer staff and sometimes even judging staff.  It takes a lot of effort to put on a tournament and often the organizers rely heavily on the community to support it (in the form of volunteers and donations).  I have not yet attended a ‘bad’ tournament.  I think that every experience can be a positive one, provided that we take the time to appreciate everyone’s efforts, and identify how we can improve it the next time for our self and others.  For this tournament specifically I witnessed many competitors encouraging each other and that made me very proud, not only to be a practitioner myself, but for children who attended and received that same positive encouragement from other teammates.  I am looking forward to the next one.
